During shortages, Ethyl alcohol was (and is still) used for hand sanitizers instead of Isopropyl alcohol. Ethyl alcohol for non-consumable products requires (by law) an ingredient to make it smell the way it does to deter children from drinking it. You are wrong, ethanol alcohol is regulated by law so all ethanol alcohol directly sold to consumers must be denatured. That means all ethanol alcohol contains denaturing reagents (even 200 proof one/100%). //@anonymous: During shortages, Ethyl alcohol was (and is still) used for hand sanitizers instead of Isopropyl alcohol. It is true, but ethanol alcohol containing hand sanitizers are not necessarily regulated because you cannot drink sanitizer. The bad smell is most likely from bad fomentation process. Good quality ethanol alcohol/sanitizer shouldn't smell bad. They provide a PDF contains a detailed gradient table. even it si 200 proof, it contains different chemicals at less than .0001%. it also contains the government issued license and permits and certificates. I asked a friend who works in a bio lab to confirm. He said it looks perfect.

Nope you’re both wrong. Ethanol (Ethyl) does not need need have denaturants to be sold to the public. Ethanol in over the counter products must to deter children from drinking it and getting alcohol poisoning. There is no such thing as a bad fermentation process. You have denatured ethanol or isopropyl alcohol for alcohol based hand sanitizers - smell should never be an indicator of quality. WHO formulation is what the FDA granted emergency use for. Absolute alcohol (100% or 200 proof) is not effective at killing microbes. There needs to be some water to destroy the membranes of the microbes. I trust Purell, but not other brands, such as germ-x, not even to mention those brand nobody heard of. They may have not enough alcohol. I ever had a small cut in my finger.
