Unlocking: If wishing to activate cellular service, these devices are locked to work on Straight Talk / Total Wireless prepaid service plans only. They may only be unlocked after 12 months of service on their respective networks and will not work on any other network/provider (such as Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T. Sprint, Cricket and so on) until unlocked. There are no unlock codes or workarounds available on the market for these devices (i.e. eBay code unlockers, etc.). See Unlock Policy

You DO NOT need to activate the phone to use it. However, you have to keep the sim card that comes with it inside the phone to turn it on. I bought one before to use as an iPod.
