Although, at least on one occasion, Groupon has been forthcoming in refunding me, I have been unable to use the license key they provided through the Microsoft system. It has been a waste of time and frustration.

Perfect timing. My membership is about to expire. I renew each year with a sale like this. Just use the +extension on your gmail address and Sam's thinks you're a new customer.

In Gmail, you can add a “+” symbol and any word you want to the end of your email address, and it will still reach your inbox. For example, if your email address is john@gmail.com, you can use john+shopping@gmail.com, john+work@gmail.com, or john+anythingyouwant@gmail.com. //@Anonymous: What is the +extension on your gmail address? Was a member 8 months ago. At the last step after credit card info was collected, it says something like "find similar member". No question, what's the consequence if choosing No continue as new? If choosing "Yes, renew" than it sends me to the Sam's login page.

Similar situation here. Found out that you'd need to click on "join" other than "renew" to get the price. You wouldn't see your order history under your old membership, but I recall I did chat with CSR years ago in a similar case and I was able to link my new membership with my old one. //@Anonymous: Was a member 8 months ago.
