It’s not about competency of the teachers. It is about TI having an anti-competitive stranglehold on testing. //@anonymous: It's not about competition, but about the competency of teachers. There are apps on cell phones that can do exactly the same thing with the exact same interface. However, cell phones are not allowed in classrooms. Also, there are websites that can do a much better job, such as WolframAlpha, besides numerous excellent open-source math packages, but teachers are not used to using any computer-related tools. //@Anonymous: Because there is no competition. //@anonymous: I can't believe this calculator is so expensive in the age of smart phones.

hope they will ship it to you. too young, too simple, sometimes naïve. //@Anonymous: Not a deal. I got one from Amazon for $66 this week. It's sold by different sellers in Amazon with varying price.

Because this is the standard tool for high school/college math education. Each school district/university has invested tons of money to buy these calculators. And the teachers get used to teach students by these calculators. All these make thing difficult to change. //@anonymous: I can't believe this calculator is so expensive in the age of smart phones.

The government is basically banning everything now //@Anonymous: What are people talking about?

By anonymous on 07/30/2022, 01:16 PM EDT
Just use Colab if you want a python environment. You just need a hotspot.

By anonymous on 07/30/2022, 05:06 AM EDT
What are people talking about?

You can use those calculators for whatever you want, but you can't use those on tests. People know that if they want to pass the tests they need to learn the math.

You don't need the government to sanction and ban everything, you know? //@Anonymous: Why don't you change the rules in western countries? //@anonymous: We were not allowed to use any calculator (even simple shopkeeper’s) in 9th-12th grade, we did PDE, curves by hand.

In Engineering, we’re allowed to use “scientific” calculator which could only do exponential (base x) calculations.

When I moved to Western country, I was shocked to find that there are calculators which can do curves, pde, matrix … still happy that I did by hand.

Exactly my story! I was shocked when I saw a high-end scientific calculator in the hands of junior high school students. //@Anonymous: We were not allowed to use any calculator (even simple shopkeeper’s) in 9th-12th grade, we did PDE, curves by hand.

Are they allowed on standardized tests? //@Anonymous: Agree, should go with a TI-NSPIRE CX ii, it also runs PYTHON, much faster processor. //@Anonymous: you can just buy a n-spire for this price

My TI 83 plus is still my favorite calculator!

The guy who wants to use his phone probably will never take a text that requires this calculator. lol //@Anonymous: because you cannot use your phone in standard tests //@Anonymous: You can get an app to emulate this calculator and more. Why would you buy it?

Ah, this I must try! //@anonymous: Not enough memory, sadly. But you can emulate a TI-84 on a Linux box! //@Anonymous: Can I install Linux on this?
