Why would anyone still buy a monochrome laser for $250 nowadays? For just a little more you can get a color printer with ink tanks that last for years and cut down on the laser toner cartridges.

But it’s an inkjet. More expensive per copy than laser, heads/ink tubes that dry out, short life. My brother laser has been going strong since 2008!

Laser is far superior to ink, in all but initial cost. All the ink printers I've had (work or home) have a far shorter life and cost far more per print. Laser is more cost effective in the long run. Plus most people only need monocrhome most of the time.
Further, prices are up right now. Four years ago, I was buying HP Color MFP printers for $250-$300. //@jj0915: Why would anyone still buy a monochrome laser for $250 nowadays? before covid, I bought one 2550 (similar model) for $100

Even within the last year this has been at $200. And further back this cost $100. Will we ever see those low prices again, or is this inflation sticky? Any economists here who want to chime in and help me decide to buy or not?

I can't believe it becomes so expensive. I got it for about $70 a few years back.

Great deal for people who prefer to pay the high inflationary price for b&w printers and monitors. Yes stick to rotary phones and cable TV :)

Printer used to be given away and manufacturers' profits used to be made by selling ink afterwards. Nowadays they don't make money on ink anymore because of the refill or aftermarket ink cardridges sold freely and cheaply everywhere. //@Anonymous: It was around 85$ before as I remember

For people who work remotely from home the printers aren't needed. They could print documents into pdf file and sent to the co-workers. I don't understand why printers became more popular during coronavirus times. They should be less from my point of view because more documents are sent in electronic format. //@Anonymous: For salary >150k managers who work at home actually, they do need a printer right now and don't care the price. I think I had the same model and got from Office Depot a year ago. It works well so far and meets my expectation since I work from home. The build-in toner is small. It is time to change. However, I remember the cost was less than $100, or might be $79.99 + tax.

I’ve had this printer at my business for about 2.5 years now, about 5 teams a month. Toner is relatively cheap and the monochrome helps a lot since color printers these days won’t work with out all cartridge not empty.

It depends on what you use it for. For large company that demands heavy duty printers with long term support, you go for the Cannon/HP/Epson. For small scale office or home use, Brothers is arguably more suitable. It's often cheaper to start. //@Anonymous: for all these years all the businesses I worked in and visited, the printers were HP, Cannon, Epson. Never saw a single Brothers printer in any business. Brother printer is cheap, but not very good quality. For home office usage and kids course study, maybe it is enough. My Brother printer now can only use the manual paper feed because one plastic component is broken after 7 years. Not worthy to repair. Will replace this printer once the ink is out.

You only need to do the tape covering when using OEM toner. (That's how manufacturers get ya to buy more before needed)

Walmart is a reliable merchant but they use Fed Ex Ground for their electronics deliveries and Fed Ex in my county is using "contract workers" who, for my address, steal every clearly marked electronics box shipped by any merchant. At least they'll have a nice Christmas; our local district attorney won't prosecute misdemeanor thefts and frauds.
