I have the M1 and also the first generation (2018). I honestly cannot tell the difference -- there are very few Apps that take advantage of the M1 power. That said, who knows about the future. Perhaps monster apps will come out in 2025? But then you will probably surely want to get a new Ipad. If budget is a concern, I'd go for a used 2018 for even less -- really same function.
