For basement use, I think it's fine. I can't really hear it. But it you want to have it in a room, you could hear it humming within 10 steps radius or so. //@Anonymous: How loud is it? //@anonymous: I have the 50-pint one. I had it for two years now and works great keeping my basement dry.
