Yes, they create a wifi id with company name and all their clients can login to this wifi using their credentials. So basically these companies use your electricity and bandwidth to serve other clients. Think about this, you are a comcast client, and away from your home, you can still connect to comcast wifi by connecting to a stranger's router who also a comcast client. That's how it works and by default the feature is turned on. Never be surprised by the widely spread wifi with company names, they might come from your router. If you use torrent then your network is not any less secure with this side walk thing. You shouldn't trust smart home devices from the first place anyways, Put them on DMZ or firewall around it.

Yes, there's privacy and security concerns. It automatically opens up everyone's wifi devices to be accessible to each other's wifi. NO THANKS. They also will be able to use up to 500MB of your data without you ever knowing about it. //@Preparation: Any privacy or security concerns?
