Without a subscription, you will be able to get notifications and will be able to respond to anyone at the door thru your phone app. You need a subscription of $3/month to have the videos saved in amazon's cloud.There's also an issue with this door bell - you can't use your current chime at your home. this was a deal breaker for me.
