All relative sense. N95 mask is not a must. Surgical or homemade is better than nothing. 10 is pretty good compare to 6 or nothing.
//@anonymous: If you're buying filters for the West Coast fire. You need at least MERV 11+ to work on those fine smoke particles. This is only MERV 10 so it is useless. Preferably MERV 13+.

this is absolutely correct. But please be aware that high filtering power may lead to high resistance for HVAC to push the air around, which may lead to potential damage to the HVAC system //@Anonymous: If you're buying filters for the West Coast fire.
