you need to toothbrush and floss everyday, down there..lol ( don't comment if you know nothing)
there are official terms, you get automatic unlock after 180 days, no need to continue service.
Unlock eligibility requirements
We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
One hundred eighty (180) days must have passed since the device’s activation date.

Dealsea does not allow links in comments. I copy paste from the policy: Unlock eligibility requirements
We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
* The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
* The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
* One hundred eighty (180) days must have passed since the device’s activation date. After 180 days since activating the phone, open the Device Unlock app to permanently unlock the phone. An internet connection is required to use the Device unlock app. Rooting your phone will disable the Device Unlock app.

Device unlock seems a bit sketchy if you cancel the service after the first month. Went to a store to check it out. The guy said you have to have active service for 6 months before you could request to unlock the phone. Giving it a pass for that reason.

You need to go to a Metro PCS corporate store where they will know what they are talking about, not a partner store which could be run by any schmo. //@anonymous: Device unlock seems a bit sketchy if you cancel the service after the first month.
