One island created per console. You can have multiple user profile, but all will share a single island. Only one active player can play per console. If you want to play multiplayers at once, each player has to have own console+game, then visit the designated island through local network access or Nintendo paid online access. The 4 people playing at the same time on one console is a joke, its fun for a few minutes until you realize you all have to be in the same area and only 1 player can actually do anything. Honestly just a little more effort on the dev part and it could have been 4 player split screen with full playability.
