That is how T-mobile stores (independently run) work. Stores charge $30 activation fee for activation and upgrades (may waive if your buddy works there). And the phone is free to upgrade for qualifying accounts. I got 8 lines (they are free). You might want to check with Cricket - but they will require you to actually use the phone for the duration. I bought it, but it was too small, so I just used a different phone. After 6mo, they wouldn't unlock it because I had not used it on their network for the time period.
