naive question: do smartphones like this one work with google maps if they have GPS but NOT an internet connection ? Are the maps preloaded ?
Thanks

no preloaded map. you have to have a internet connection to use google map.

How about regular GPS? Does it have something like that Nokia 5800 has, you could put it up to a dashboard and use it as a regular GPS without going online?
Thanks

The hardware of this phone is fully capable of navigation without Internet connection. What you need is to have navigation software like Garmin Mobile XT, which preloads maps and incur no monthly fees. The downside is the small screen makes it difficult to read while you are driving, but you can still benefit from turn by turn voice directions.

If you are asking whether it works for Sprint, the answer is NO. It's a GSM phone.

I bought this phone when it was 180 after tax was around 200 something. This phone is great, but has the following issues, this )but i will not consider as issues. If you know how to use it you will like it. 1. this one can not turn off. it means no off bottom, 2. has touch screen, but has to work with pen, You can install SPB mobile shell, and will run much better. 3. GPS is built in, and has google map, but.. the map need to go internet to use it...so you need to pay internet data fee for your company, if you want the navigation to work.. OR, you can install tomtom and Garmin on it, I had both on it, runs great. Another issue is this one did not offer update to windwos mobile 6.5. AND in few months they will have a bigger screen for sale, but is a good phone, I got it, cause i know how to use it.
You can search on Dealsea for DELL, and you will surpurise this phone did not sell well, this why dell want to get ride of it. buy it and make it a good phone.

If it does not work with Sprint or Verizon why does it say WCDMA in specifications?

If you look on the sprint website, they sell it also...for about 10 dollars more. So it must work with the sprint service.

Don't get confused.
There are actually 3 versions of Palm Treo Pro sold in USA.
Unlocked GSM Treo Pro(selling here),
Sprint Treo Pro,
Alltel Treo Pro
You can buy Sprint version Treo Pro from Sprint. But it's different from this GSM Troe Pro. You CANNOT buy this GSM Treo Pro and expect it will work with Sprint. The unlocked GSM Palm Treo Pro only works with AT&T and T-Mobile in the States. 3G capability of this phone works with AT&T only, not T-Mobile.

WCDMA is different from CDMA2000 (Verizon and Sprint).
